Choosing your kitchen backsplash

If you want to add style to your kitchen without having to do it all over again, why not start with an eye-catching kitchen backsplash?

The kitchen backsplash is the wall space between the counter and the cabinets. This area can be painted, as it is in many homes, but that’s not your only option. If you really want to add some spice to your kitchen decor, the backsplash might be worth looking into. It can often be the focal point of a kitchen when it uses tiles or a different material.

Factors to consider

Before diving headfirst into your project, consider your budget. A tapestry will cost less than a mosaic of hand-painted tiles, right?

First, give yourself some time to visualize the style of kitchen that appeals most to you. Since it visually separates the cabinets from the counter, the kitchen backsplash is a decor element that draws the eye—unless you want to cover this surface more discreetly.

Another aspect to consider is cleaning. Choose a material that is easy to maintain, because you will need to clean kitchen splashes often.

Lastly, consider the condition the surface is in, and how difficult installation will be. Does the wall need any repairs? Is it straight enough to install tiles? Will you require a specialist to install the kitchen backsplash?

And remember to properly prepare the surface for the material you’ll be using.

Which option is right for you?

Depending on your budget and the desired impact, you have several options:

  • Paint. Painting the backsplash is the simplest and most economical option. All you have to do is choose a colour that will complement the counter and cabinets. Pick a paint you can wash easily and frequently.
  • Wallpaper. Wallpapers designed for the kitchen offer beautiful designs that enhance the overall look of this important room.
  • Self-adhesive vinyl. This is a practical option—it covers this type of surface very well, and you can find inspiration in the many available patterns, such as fake bricks that look very realistic.
  • Ceramic tiles. This is a popular material for kitchen backsplashes. Ceramic tiles come in many shapes, and you will have a wide selection of colours and patterns. From white to decorated tiles, the possibilities are endless. You can even vary the direction of the tiles or use the tiles to create your own motif.
  • Wood. Wood is very trendy, and a wooden backsplash can be charming. If you’re looking for a more vintage look, painted vertical planks (panelling) are a great option. Caution: wood can get damaged from moisture and humidity from the sink or the kettle on the counter!

You can also use marble, metal or concrete to create a unique kitchen design.
