Your Kitchen Counter, Your Choice of Material
Quartz, marble, granite, slate, Corian... With so many options available, selecting a material for your kitchen countertop can be a daunting task. To make the job easier, we’ve provided a brief overview of some of the more popular options.
If you like the look of this slightly marbled stone, granite is definitely a stylish and functional option. Granite is a natural, polished stone that is easy to clean, impervious to water and heat, and stain resistant (after applying a sealant).
Less “natural” than granite, quartz is an engineered stone to which resins, binding agents and sometimes colour are added. Quartz countertops are extremely resistant and easy to maintain. Because quartz is non-porous, bacteria will not be trapped inside. Quartz comes in a variety of finishes that are bright and homogenous. A good option if you can afford it.
Ah, the incomparable elegance and luxuriousness of marble! Its beauty and ease of maintenance have won the hearts of many kitchen renovators. However, its porosity makes it more susceptible to stains and it therefore requires the application of a sealant or wax so that it retains its luster over time.
A beautiful and natural stone, slate transforms a simple kitchen counter into a work of art. Slate is more subdued than the other options, and must be coated with a sealant and mineral oil every two years. It is also vulnerable to shocks, scratches, cracks and stains.
Corian or resin
Corian, a polymer, is also considered a high-end material like marble or granite. It is becoming increasingly popular in kitchens as it is highly resistant and, once polished, it looks as though it consists of only one seamless piece. One of the advantages is that the sink can also be made of Corian. It is nonporous, making it resistant to bacteria and stains, and comes in approximately 100 different colours!
Finally, for those who like an industrial look, there’s nothing like concrete. While concrete countertops are very durable and resistant, they are also susceptible to cracks and stains.
